Best browser games you can play without download
A tour of browser game genres: what is out there, how the genres differ and how to tell in a minute whether a game is built honestly.
The best browser game is one that starts in seconds, remembers your progress and does not bury the rules under ads. Which genre is best for you depends on how much time you have and what you feel like. Below are the main genres of browser games with examples, and at the end a five-point check that separates a good game from a cheap clone.
This list is organised by genre. If you would rather choose by situation (two players, a group, five minutes), see best free online games, by mood and group. We make our own browser games, so some of them appear here, and we name other people's games just as plainly.
Why browser games are back
Browser games used to run on Flash. Adobe ended support for Flash Player on 31 December 2020 and browsers shut it off. HTML5 and WebGL took over: they run on phones and computers with no plugin. A modern browser game can draw proper graphics, play sound and save progress, so it is not worse than a small mobile game. The difference is that you do not install it, and you can send it to a friend as a link.
Puzzle and logic games
The biggest genre. Rounds are short, rules are visible at once, and you can play in any spare minute.
- Word games. Wordle: five letters, six tries, one word a day.
- Checkers and puzzles. Checkers: Towers has eighty "find the winning move" puzzles, a ten-lesson school and nine rule sets.
- Tic tac toe and its relatives. In our game there are nine: from the classic to Order and Chaos and Nine Boards. Against a master computer the classic always ends in a draw, which is why the variants exist.
The choice comes down to one thing: do you want to think for a minute or for half an hour? More puzzle games are in our puzzle and logic collection.
Card and board games
Everything normally played with a deck or on a board. A good browser version tracks the rules for you, so nobody argues about whose turn it is or who took what.
Durak, Thousand, checkers, chess, battleship. For chess, Lichess is a free open service that runs on donations and shows no ads. Among our games, Durak: The Journey and Thousand: The Journey are the card games and Naval Battle is the board one. We cover the rules of several card games in card games for friends.
Hidden object games
A genre for people who like to sit and look closely. You get a painted scene and a list of things to find. Three things separate a good one from a weak one: whether the scene is drawn so that you want to walk around it with your eyes, whether there are different ways to search, and whether the search turns into random tapping. The last one is fixed with a small penalty for a miss.
In Hall of Finds the rooms are painted like oil paintings: a country attic with a samovar, a shared kitchen, a railway buffet, a watchmaker's desk. There are six ways to search, including in the dark with a lantern and by riddles. All twenty-four rooms unlock by playing, not by paying. A trip into a room spends one entry, and entries come back one every twelve minutes; the free rooms are always open and cost nothing. This kind of limit is usual in the genre, but check that a game does not hit it after five minutes.
Merge and cozy games
You combine identical items to get new ones and fill orders. The pace is relaxed, there is no winning, just a sense of order. The main risk of the genre is a game built on waiting: out of energy, wait or pay. Look at how it is handled before you get attached. In Corner Bakery energy is earned in the game, the shop sells separate top-ups, every purchase is confirmed by you, and there are no subscriptions or automatic charges.
Role-playing games and browser MMOs
A genre for long play. Your hero has a story, gear and a home, and you come back for many days. Two things matter most: where your hero is stored and whether you can finish the main content without spending.
Free Lands is a small online RPG: the Meadow Haven, twelve regions, crafting, turn-based fights, camps and bosses, expeditions alone with companions or with a squad of friends. The hero is stored on the server and survives clearing the browser. It is not a large MMO, and we say so.
Io games and reflex arcades
Another popular genre: you control a cell, a snake or a ship on a shared map with other live players. Matches are fast and entry is instant; Agar.io and Slither.io are the well-known examples. The downside is that ads inside these games can be intrusive and progress is thin.
What to do if a game stutters
A browser game lives on the resources of a single tab, so weak phones suffer first. Close other tabs. If the game has a graphics quality setting or a calm mode, switch it on; our games have such settings. If it still freezes after that, the game is not built for your device, which is a good reason to pick another one.
How to spot a good browser game
Check five things in the first minute.
- Start. It opens at once, you do not download or install anything, and there is no long form before the first match.
- Phone. Buttons work with a finger, text is readable, the interface is not cut off.
- Progress. It is saved in the browser or on a server, and the game says which. If you clear your browser, a good game offers a recovery key or an account.
- Money. It is clear what is free and what is paid. One-time purchases are more honest than quietly renewing subscriptions.
- Rules. They are in the game itself, not only on someone else's forum.
