Best browser MMORPGs and free online RPGs
A guide by type rather than a ranking: browser MMOs, text based online RPGs, idle RPGs and small co-op ones, plus five checks before you spend your evenings on one.
A free online RPG that runs in a browser tab usually comes in one of four kinds: a real MMO squeezed into the browser, a text based online RPG, an idle RPG, or a small co-op game for you and a few friends. Which is best depends on whether you want a crowd, a story or a quick check-in between other things. Below is each kind with live examples, and five questions that help you choose without reading a hundred reviews.
We make a browser RPG ourselves, Free Lands. It is free, it opens on a phone or a computer, and there is nothing to install. It is a small online RPG, not a huge MMO, and we say so up front. Every other game here belongs to someone else, and what we write about it comes from public sources. Terms of free to play games change often, so check the official site before you commit.
What counts as a browser MMORPG
For this list a browser MMORPG is one you open from a link, with no client of several hundred megabytes. That leaves out a lot of famous names. Guild Wars 2 and the free trial of Final Fantasy XIV are strong free MMORPGs, but they are PC downloads. If you searched for "mmorpg browser games" or "free mmo games", you probably want a game that lives in a tab.
Expect browser MMOs to be smaller than their desktop cousins: fewer servers, a simpler world, a quieter population. In return you get a start in seconds.
Browser MMOs with a crowd
Closest to the classic formula: a hero, levels, gear, a shared map and other players.
- Flyff Universe. A free MMORPG you play in the browser on a computer or a phone. It launched in 2022, developed by Gala Lab and published by Wemade. Early reviews mention servers in Southeast Asia, which can mean lag for players elsewhere, and cash shop items that give an edge. Check both before you grow attached to a character.
- Stein.world. A 2D pixel MMORPG with quests, wave dungeons and rankings. It runs in the browser and also has a Windows client. It is freemium, and some features are limited in the free version.
The question for this type is always the same: what can money buy? If the shop sells power instead of looks, competing for free gets harder.
Text based online RPGs and story games
If you like reading and planning more than clicking on monsters, a text based online RPG is the answer. There is almost no graphics load, so these run on any phone.
- Kingdom of Loathing. A free comedy RPG in the browser, released in 2003 and still updated by its studio, Asymmetric. A small team has kept it going for over twenty years.
- Fallen London. A story game set in a Victorian London dragged underground. It has run since 2009 and is made by Failbetter Games. There is no traditional PvP or grind: you pick story cards and steer your character through events.
- Torn. A text based MMORPG about a crime-ridden city. You start down one of three paths: fighter, criminal or executive. The site says it carries no ads and will stay free, and claims thousands of active players. Reviews mention a steep learning curve, so plan to read the guides.
If you want just one text based RPG to try tonight, start with Kingdom of Loathing. It is easier to get into than Torn.
Idle RPGs
An idle RPG keeps your hero training and gathering while you do something else, and you come back to make decisions. Good if you like the shape of an MMORPG but have no spare hours.
- Melvor Idle. An idle game built on the classic MMO loop of skills, dungeons and gear, published by Jagex. It began as a browser game. There is now a paid Steam version and a free mobile one with a single purchase that removes ads, so check what the browser version offers today.
Small co-op online RPGs
An online RPG does not need ten thousand players. Often it is better to go on an expedition with two or three friends than to get lost on a shared map among strangers.
That is how Free Lands works. You begin in Meadow Haven, a small settlement by a river, pick a combat role and a profession, meet the locals and take your first quests. Beyond it are twelve regions and nearly a hundred places on the atlas, a house and a plot of land, crafting from the materials you gather, and journeys with turn-based battles, camps and bosses. You can go alone with companions or bring a party of friends. There is a shared campfire chat (land, party, guild and private talks), a market where players list their goods, and a tutorial you can skip.
What matters when you choose: the game is free, the shop sells hero looks and helper bundles, each bought once, with no subscriptions. Your hero is stored on the server, so clearing your browser does not erase it. What it does not have is the scale of a big MMO. If you want a crowded map and large groups, look at the first section.
More games that work well with a friend and a link are in games to play with a friend.
Five checks before you pick
- What people pay for. Looks and convenience are fine. Power and faster leveling mean a race against whoever pays.
- How long a session takes. Some games want an hour in one go, others five minutes in the morning. Idle and text based games, and turn-based fights, forgive pauses.
- Whether you need other players. In a small online RPG you can go with companions. In a big MMO some content is closed without a group.
- Where your hero lives. If progress is only in the browser, clearing the cache wipes it. A login or a recovery key is a good sign.
- How it runs on your device. Open it on a phone and on a weak laptop and see whether the tab lags and whether you can play with a thumb.
Give any new game its first evening and run it through these five. For other browser genres, see best browser games you can play without download.
